Denver Broncos DC Dennis Allen has agreed to become Head Coach of the Oakland Raiders. Allen, formally with the New Orleans Saints as a DB coach, improved the Broncos D drastically in one season.
Unlike previous Raider Head Coach hirings, Oakland wisely decided to hire a defensive-minded coach. The Raiders’ offense features QB Carson Palmer and RB Darren McFadden, but their defense lacks the necessary amount of strongholds to succeed consistently in the NFL. LB Rolando McClain has emerged into the scene very quickly, and veteran DE Richard Seymour provides leadership and knowledge to the Raiders D.
They truly need building on that side of the ball. They should work around McClain, and find ways to win with what they have on their roster. The loss of CB Nnamdi Asomugha was more than significant, so they would benefit immensely from a young Cornerback. Former Nebraska CB Alfonzo Dennard would be a fantastic first round selection this season, but there’s a problem—they don’t have a first round pick this year.
The Raiders need to build off of their young team and groom their players in the next season or two. After seeing how fast Allen could change Denver’s once lackluster defense, he can undoubtably do it again.
