Golden Analysis: Chancellor’s Interception

Seattle Seahawks S Kam Chancellor is known for dishing out big hits, but this article focuses in on his crucial interception.

In the NFC Championship, San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick’s three-turnover meltdown led to a Seattle Seahawks’ 23-17 victory and a Super Bowl berth. Seattle’s zone defense truly made the difference in the ballgame.

One of Kaepernick’s turnovers was an interception by ‘Hawks S Kam Chancellor. The Seahawks employed a single-high safety (S Earl Thomas), so Chancellor was rolled down to a hybrid outside linebacker/rover position.

Thomas, along with CB’s Richard Sherman and Byron Maxwell, dropped into a three-deep, 1/3 zone alignment. Chancellor “buzzed” (hence the play name, Cover 3 Buzz) over in the direction of the sideline.

At the time of the throw, nobody was in Chancellor’s buzz-zone, so he dropped back in perfect time to intercept Kaep’s throw, which was intended for WR Anquan Boldin.

The Seahawks will take on the Denver Broncos on February 2nd in MetLife Stadium.
