Mizzou Tigers DE/OLB Michael Sam (RS Senior)

Size: 6’2″, 255

Injuries: Not Applicable

Positives:

  • Very athletic
  • Very quick
  • Fast bursts off the LOS
  • Strong
  • Consistent pass rusher
  • Consistent tackler
  • High motor
  • Run stopper

Negatives:

  • Can get stuck in the interior trenches
  • Lacks ideal height
  • Needs to work on run block shedding

Summary: Obviously by now, you have heard of Sam’s coming out. On the field, he is a talented football player with an aggressive motor. He makes plays both pass rushing and in run defense. Last season, Sam, the 2013 SEC Defensive Player of the Year, racked up 48 total tackles, 11.5 sacks, and 19 tackles for loss. His best fit would be in a 4-3 Defensive End position, but his height certainly hurts his draft stock.

Grade: 3.3/5 (Eventual Starter/Rounds 3-4). Sam is a talented football player, but needs to show that his athleticism and motor can overcome a lack of height. He is reminiscent of Baltimore Ravens DE Elvis Dumervil, who stands at 5’11”, 260. If Sam can bulk up and continue playing with a high motor, he will have a successful NFL career.
