Smith’s legal issues have taken a toll on his production.
The San Francisco 49ers have picked up OLB Aldon Smith’s 5th-year option (2015), per the team’s official Twitter.

Smith, who was recently arrested for a fake bomb threat in the Los Angeles International Airport, missed a chunk of the 2013 season while spending time in a rehabilitation facility. In late April, rumors surfaced that the Niners were likely to retain the 2012 Pro Bowler following the LAX embarrassment.
Smith’s potential flashed when he registered a franchise single-season record 19.5 sacks tally two years ago, and the 2015 extension gives the edge rusher one more chance.
