The Texans have been searching for their starting signal caller.
Per the Houston Chronicle, the Houston Texans released quarterback TJ Yates. Yates was competing against QB’s Ryan Fitzpatrick, Case Keenum, and Tom Savage.
UPDATE: Yates wasn’t released. Rather, he was traded to the Atlanta Falcons in exchange for LB Akeem Dent, per ProFootballTalk.
Yates was the odd man out. The former UNC Tar Heel started five regular season games for Houston since the franchise selected him in the fifth round of the 2011 draft, notably.
Texans head coach Bill O’Brien announced that Fitzpatrick will be the day one starter. Fitzpatrick signed with the Texans earlier this year.
Keenum will likely seize the No. 2 role, and Savage, a 2014 fourth round pick, will be the developmental prospect. Keenum and Savage should compete in the future.
