First Round Recap

As expected, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers picked QB Jameis Winston first overall. The Philadelphia Eagles reportedly offered a prodigious package for the second overall pick, but the Tennessee Titans stayed put and drafted QB Marcus Mariota.

The Jacksonville Jaguars drafted DE/OLB Dante Fowler, and the Oakland Raiders drafted WR Amari Cooper fourth overall. Even with DL Leonard Williams, who many view as the draft’s top prospect, available at fifth overall, the Washington Redskins drafted offensive lineman Brandon Scherff.

The New York Jets drafted Williams and bolstered their impressive defensive line. The Chicago Bears added WR Kevin White and the Atlanta Falcons added OLB Vic Beasley. The New York Giants drafted 6’6″, 329-pound Ereck Flowers to help shore up the offensive line.

The St. Louis Rams turned a few heads by selecting RB Todd Gurley. The Rams had good depth at running back prior to the draft, but elected to implement the “best available” strategy, which typically works in the long run.

The Minnesota Vikings drafted CB Trae Waynes, the Cleveland Browns added DL Danny Shelton, the New Orleans Saints drafted OT Andrus Peat, and the Miami Dolphins added WR DeVante Parker.

The San Diego Chargers leapfrogged the Houston Texans by swapping first round picks with the San Francisco 49ers (17th overall to 15th overall) and drafted RB Melvin Gordon. The Chargers also gave the 49ers a 2015 fourth round pick and a 2016 fifth round pick.

The Texans drafted CB Kevin Johnson, and the 49ers added DL Arik Armstead. The Kansas City Chiefs drafted CB Marcus Peters.

The Cleveland Browns drafted offensive lineman Cameron Erving, who is a top offensive line prospect who can play center and tackle. However, the Browns have other needs that they could have addressed.

The Philadelphia Eagles added Pac-12 WR/RS Nelson Agholor, who will be a factor on offense and on special teams. The Cincinnati Bengals added OT Cedric Ogbuehi and the Pittsburgh Steelers drafted DE/OLB Alvin “Bud” Dupree.

The Denver Broncos traded their 28th overall selection, a 2015 fifth round pick, a 2016 fifth round pick, and OL Manny Ramirez with the Detroit Lions. The Broncos picked DE/OLB Shane Ray.

The Arizona Cardinals drafted OT DJ Humphries, the Carolina Panthers drafted OLB Shaq Thompson, and the Baltimore Ravens added WR Breshad Perriman,

To close out the first round, the Dallas Cowboys added CB Byron Jones, the Lions drafted OL Laken Tomlinson, the Indianapolis Colts added WR Phillip Dorsett, the Green Bay Packers drafted S Demarious Randall, the New Orleans Saints drafted LB Stephone Anthony, and the New England Patriots drafted DT Malcom Brown.
