Tennessee Titans rookie quarterback Marcus Mariota, the second overall pick in the 2015 draft, completed his first NFL practice on Friday.
Mariota played in a spread option offense in college at Oregon, but the Titans’ extensive use in the shotgun and pistol formation will help him the transition to the NFL and compete for the top spot on the depth chart.
In March, Titans head coach Ken Whisenhunt stated, “If we pick him at No. 2, you definitely think he can be the Day 1 starter.” However, Titans QB Zach Mettenberger, a 2014 sixth round pick, did fairly well during his rookie campaign and could compete against Mariota.
If Mariota starts Week One, expect many shotgun looks and an emphasis on getting the run game started.
