2016 First Round Draft Recap


  • As expected, quarterback Jared Goff went first overall to the Los Angeles Rams, and the Philadelphia Eagles picked QB Carson Wentz with the next pick. The Eagles did not trade disgruntled QB Sam Bradford.
  • Defensive end Joey Bosa went third overall to the San Diego Chargers.
  • The Dallas Cowboys drafted running back Ezekiel Elliot fourth overall. Elliot has a chance to be very productive behind the Cowboys’ offensive line.
  • The Jacksonville Jaguars bolstered their secondary with versatile defensive back Jalen Ramsey. The Baltimore Ravens added offensive tackle Ronnie Stanley seventh overall.
  • For the second consecutive year, the San Francisco 49ers drafted an Oregon defensive lineman. In 2015, they picked Arik Armstead. This year, they picked DeForest Buckner.
  • The Tennessee Titans traded up to eighth overall to select OT Jack Conklin. The Chicago Bears traded up to ninth overall to select linebacker Leonard Floyd, and the New York Giants rounded out the Top 10 by picking cornerback Eli Apple.
  • The Tampa Bay Buccaneers drafted CB Vernon Hargreaves, and the New Orleans Saints picked defensive tackle Sheldon Rankins one pick later.
  • With the 13th overall pick, the Miami Dolphins ended OT Laremy Tunsil’s free fall, which was largely due to his Twitter account being hacked.
  • The Oakland Raiders added safety Karl Joseph, the Cleveland Browns added wide receiver Corey Coleman, and the Detroit Lions added OT Taylor Decker.
  • The second half of the first round began with the Atlanta Falcons, who picked S Keanu Neal.
  • The Indianapolis Colts picked center Ryan Kelly. Many believe Kelly was one of the safest prospects drafted last night.
  • The New York Jets drafted LB Darron Lee 20th overall.
  • From picks 21-23, three wideouts were consecutively picked. The Houston Texans drafted WR Will Fuller, the Washington Redskins drafted WR Josh Doctson, and the Minnesota Vikings drafted WR Laquon Treadwell.
  • The Cincinnati Bengals added CB William Jackson III, and the Pittsburgh Steelers added CB Artie Burns with the next pick.
  • The Denver Broncos traded up to draft QB Paxton Lynch.
  • The Green Bay Packers began the run on offensive and defensive lineman by drafting DT Kenny Clark. The San Francisco 49ers traded up for guard Joshua Garnett, and the Arizona Cardinals drafted DT Robert Nkemdiche with the next pick. The Carolina Panthers drafted DT Vernon Butler, and the Seattle Seahawks drafted OT Germain Ifedi.
  • Linebacker Myles Jack, who was a projected top five pick last week, is still available prior to the second round.
